Edit: Just to make some things clear. Shepard run's out of thermal clips so she's throwing away the shotgun. Instead of that she's gona take the assault rifle from her back.
About the shield system. Shepard using secondary and primary shield system. The primary protects her vital organs. And it can deflect even the front shoot. But after every one shoot its overcharging so its have to release the "extra" energy. That's why shepard have glowing arms. There are the "filters" which release the extra energy.
The secondary shield protecting the arms and the legs. Its using the "capacitor" technology. After every shoot the layer of the shields is destroyed. There are more layers. You can see the capacitors already been destroyed on the shoulder and on the right leg.
I hope you understand what I tried to explain. Its just my Idea so you don't have to take it very seriously. Ok. That's it for now
